My introduction to Jean-Michel Basquiat came quite serendipitously last summer at the Guggenheim Bilbao, where his raw, electric style instantly caught my eye. I came across more of his work later in the United States, his home country, but it was an unexpected encounter in Antwerp that stayed with me; finding myself in front of one of his canvases nestled among Flemish Renaissance masters at the Rubens House. His vibrant canvas created a striking juxtaposition with the classical beauty of Rubens and Bruegel.
That moment enticed me to learn more about this pivotal figure of 1980s American art, one of the first Black artists to achieve major commercial success in the United States. His artistic vocabulary is characterised by the frequent use of written words, neo-expressionist brushstrokes, and blazing colours, woven together with tribal influences that honour African cultural heritage. Basquiat’s work is not merely l’art pour l’art; it carries a deeply activist message. Through his paintings, he critiques racism and social inequality in a poignant way that could only emerge from lived experience.
